The US Federal Communications Commission said it would ban imports of additional equipment made by a group of Chinese manufacturers.
The order expands an FCC ban introduced in 2022 on new models of telecommunications and video-surveillance equipment made by Huawei, ZTE, Hytera, Hikvision, and Dahua. The expanded ban will also apply to older models of equipment, rather than only models designed from late 2022.
The FCC said the covered equipment is used for public safety, security of government facilities, physical security surveillance of critical infrastructure, and other national-security purposes. The expanded order is set to take effect in early July.
The FCC had previously banned imports of all new models of Chinese drones in December and new models of Chinese-made consumer routers in March. The new order does not prohibit imports of earlier models of drones or routers.
